Public Profile

Distinguished and Famous people from Brisbane Central Business District

Central Brisbane has been a workplace for careers whose reach extended well beyond the city. Queen Street links an influential dressmaker and inventor with a later chapter in wartime Allied command.

๐Ÿงต Janet Walker

Janet Walker opened her Brisbane dressmaking business in Queen Street in 1882, later moving to larger Adelaide Street premises before returning to Queen Street. By the end of 1898 she employed 120 people in what became colonial Brisbane's largest private dressmaking establishment. She also patented an adjustable dressmaker's stand in 1904, designed to reproduce a customer's body shape. Her clientele extended into rural Queensland and New South Wales through mail orders. The city-centre connection is unusually concrete: workshops, shops, skilled employment and an invention that travelled beyond the local fashion trade.

๐ŸŽ–๏ธ General Douglas MacArthur

Douglas MacArthur moved his South-West Pacific headquarters from Melbourne to Brisbane in July 1942. The AMP Building on Queen Street housed his command, including his personal office on the eighth floor. His connection is wartime command work in Brisbane, rather than Australian birth or upbringing. The building became known as MacArthur Chambers, and the museum within it preserves that history. A familiar city shopping address was once part of the machinery through which Allied operations in the Pacific were directed.
